Dr. Steven Bodley brings his knowledge of chronic pain
management to bear on the opioid crisis
t the most recent meeting of Coun-
cil, Dr. Steven Bodley assumed the
role of the College’s President. He takes
over the helm at a period in which the
College has just launched an intense opioid strategy to
ensure appropriate prescribing. Fortunately, Dr. Bodley
knows the complex issues well – for the past 25 years,
he has included chronic pain management as part of his
anesthesia practice.
In this article, we introduce you to Dr. Bodley, a
North Bay anesthesiologist.
You practise in North Bay. Did you grow up there?
A: Actually, I grew up in southeastern Ontario. North

Bay was a similar size town. My wife, Lori and I
loved the opportunities for enjoying the outdoors,
the remoteness and the beauty of the area, and the
small town feeling. It has been a great place to raise a
family. From a professional point of view, I was attract-
ed to the strong anesthesia service and the wide variety
of cases, unusual in a town of this size.
What led you into medicine?
A: I fell into it, more than anything. I’d like to say I was
‘called’ but, in fact, I spent quite some time bouncing
around. We were lucky back then – we had the time
to explore different paths and make some mistakes. I
studied journalism and worked in the trades.
