COVID-19 AND THE EYE : ALTERNATIVE FACTS

James Chodosh , MD , MPH , will present the Harold A . Stein , MD Lecture on Friday , November 12 , at 3:00 pm . Dr . Chodosh is the Edith Ives Cogan Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and is a clinician scientist known internationally and respected for his work on molecular virology , viral genomics and viral pathogenesis .
Dr . Chodosh will explore in his presentation the ophthalmic sequelae of Coronavirus disease 2019 ( COVID-19 ). At the time of this writing , COVID-19 has resulted in the loss of over 4 million lives . The most common site of infection is the respiratory tract , but the ophthalmic literature has been replete with reports of ophthalmic sequelae . In this talk , Dr . Chodosh will critically examine the basic virology of COVID-19 , means of infection , manifestations of disease , public health considerations , including general preventions and vaccines , and available evidence for infection of the ocular surface and transmission of virus through ocular secretions .
Dr . Chodosh serves as Vice Chair of Education for Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School , as well as the Associate Director of Cornea and Refractive Surgery Service and the Associate Chief for Ophthalmic Education at Massachusetts Eye and Ear . He also serves as the Associate Director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Service and his clinical interests include ocular infections , chemical burns , Stevens-Johnson syndrome and keratoprosthesis surgery .
Dr . Chodosh and his team are leaders in ocular adenoviral pathogenesis and have made great contributions to the prevention and treatment of vision loss due to corneal infection , inflammation and scarring . His group generated the first whole genome sequence for the adenoviruses that cause epidemic keratoconjunctivitis ( EKC ), created the first mouse model of adenovirus keratitis and pioneered the cornea as a model system in which to study the role of tissue fibroblasts in innate immune responses to infection . Dr . Chodosh has also dedicated himself to the worldwide promotion of the Boston Keratoprosthesis ( KPro ), a unique corneal substitute developed by Dr . Claes H . Dohlman and has performed artificial cornea implantation surgery worldwide . He recently achieved FDA

approval for the Lucia keratoprosthesis , a lower-cost device to treat corneal blindness , including in economically deprived nations .
Dr . Chodosh earned his medical degree and completed his residency at the Baylor College of Medicine followed by a fellowship in Corneal and External Diseases and Surgery at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute , and a postdoctoral research fellowship in Molecular Virology at St . Jude Children ’ s Research Hospital . He is a member of the PhD Program in Virology at Harvard Medical School . Dr . Chodosh is a committed teacher and mentor , and has trained postdoctoral fellows , predoctoral fellows and residents in research . He has authored over 350 articles and book chapters and is a four-time award recipient from Research to Prevent Blindness .
Join us to learn about the challenges of COVID-19 and its impact on the world of ophthalmology . We will learn firsthand how our world has changed and its effect on clinicians and our future patient protocols .

The Harold A . Stein , MD Lecture
This year marks the 19th Annual Harold A . Stein , MD Lecture , in honor of Harold A . Stein , MD , FRCSC . The JCAHPO Education and Research Foundation established the Harold A . Stein , MD , FRCSC , Endowed Lectureship in 2000 .
Dr . Stein was instrumental in organizing the first Plenary ( Keynote ) Session held in San Francisco , CA , in 1985 , and one of the early founding Commissioners of JCAHPO ( now IJCAHPO ). He served as IJCAHPO ’ s President from 1986-1987 , and served as a Commissioner from 1972-1992 . In 1968 , Dr . Stein wrote his first textbook , The Ophthalmic Assistant , which is in its 11th edition . Dr . Stein ’ s book sales proceeds are generously donated to the Foundation to support technician education and certification .
Dr . Stein was a co-founder of The Bochner Eye Institute in Toronto , Ontario , Canada , where he resided with his wife , Anne . After many years of a prestigious career , Dr . Stein passed away in January 2021 .
