After 35 years of excellent teaching, Mrs. Sue Stubbs is retiring. Mrs.
Stubbs has always had a passion for wanting to be a kindergarten
teacher ever since she was a little girl. After attending the University of
Nebraska at Kearney and receiving a bachelor’s degree in elementary
education with an endorsement in early childhood education, she was
ready to pursue that dream. At the time she was attending UNK it was
known as Kearney State College. After college, she taught
kindergarten at Bertrand Community School for one year. This same
year she got married to Gary Stubbs.
Mrs. Sue Stubbs started working at Litchfield Public School teaching
kindergarten in January 1982. At that time kindergarten was a full day
only during the 2nd semester. It was later changed to three days a
week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It was changed again
to full time 5 days a week. Throughout the years kindergarten has
changed. Mrs.Stubbs said, “Kindergarten at the beginning of my
career was more like what Pre- K is now with an emphasis on
readiness skills. Kindergarten is much more advanced now- it’s what
1st grade used to be.” When I asked her what her favorite memory at
Litchfield School is Mrs. Stubbs said, “I will take many fond memories
with me when I leave. I most cherish the students, co-workers, and
administrators that I have had the pleasure of working with throughout
the years.” Mrs. Stubbs’ life has been touched and enriched by many
five-year-olds over the years. She hopes that she has made a
difference in her students’ lives as well. She has started and
maintained some traditions in her classroom to create some memories
for the kindergarteners. She says, “Former students tell me that they
still remember bubbles with flyswatters, making cream cheese
valentine mints, and plaster of Paris Mother’s Day handprint plaques.”
These traditions will always be remembered. Mrs. Stubbs has had a
great impact on many students throughout the years. She says that
her most rewarding thing about teaching was seeing the progress of
students from the first day of school to the last day of school. Her
teaching career is sadly coming to an end but
she does have plans after her retirement. Her
husband, Gary, is also retiring after a 41 year
teaching career that began here at LPS.
They hope to travel and spend time with
family. They plan to make sure that their
three grandchildren are a top priority. She
also hopes to renew her long neglected
hobbies such as reading, gardening, and
baking. We would like to thank Mrs.Sue
Stubbs for a wonderful 35 years here at
Litchfield Public Schools. She will be greatly
missed at LPS but the memories that she
created will always be remembered.
