Here’s How to Woo
That Special Someone
Guidelines for your Valentine’s date
By Luke Washe

Valentine’s Day is a special day, set
aside specifi cally for people to take time
and show their affection for loved ones.
Or it used to be.
Today, Valentine’s Day is no more
than a date on the calendar, reminding
us to buy some
chocolates for our
favorite teacher
and steal Pixy Stix
from our younger
brother.
What hap-
pened? Kids our
age used to take
advantage of
this special day
by spending it
with their special
someone. It didn’t
take much, either;
a fancy dinner and
a walk in the park was the key to winning
hearts.
With Valentine’s Day upon us, I've
spent some time soul-searching, trying
to fi nd my lucky lady. My choice, whose
name will not be revealed due to Chieftain
guidelines, is a Sophomore at Marian
High School. (You know who you are,
Dena.) Now, I could spend time talking
about how attractive she is, but instead
I’d like to explain my very subjective
opinions about the day I plan to spend
with her.
First, the one major thing that must be

accounted for before every date is to get
on the good side of your date’s father. If
your fi rst impression is a lion on the hunt
for his gazelle, the chances are severely
high for an early curfew and constant
check-ins, which are bound to ruin the
night.
My recommendation is, when you fi rst
meet her father,
shake his hand
with strength
and respect, an-
nouncing your
presence.
Next, we will
arrive at the fa-
mous SoDoSoPa
district in down-
town Birming-
ham. There is a
wide variety of
delightful foods

ing from just
about every country. If you haven’t tried
SoDoSoPa yet, you must. For directions,
use these coordinates on Google maps:

After dinner, you need to assess how
well you or your date are getting along.
If you’ve found your date quite tasteless
and boring, you should offer to drop her
off at home, but even that can sometimes
be too much. If it went well and you’d
like to continue the evening, you should
walk around the rest of downtown Bir-

that all
changed when
we moved the fi rst day of school to
Aug. 15. This year, we started on
Aug. 14. It is hard to fi nd anyone in
the school who enjoyed coming back
so early, but you’d also have a hard
time fi nding anyone who didn’t enjoy
having fi rst-semester exams before
Christmas.
What’s especially exciting right
now is the addition of an entire week
off for Mid-Winter Break, which
begins this Monday. This will be the
second year in a row where we’ve
had a full week off in February.
In addition, the new schedule has
changed signifi cantly for the bet-
ter in other ways. Even though we
only started one day earlier this year,
we will end a full week earlier – the
