A cancer diagnosis three years ago started Cathy Gero and her family on two paths : getting treatment and giving back .

with cancer can be an all-consuming way of life , between receiving treatments , learning about options , working with medical care teams and making lifestyle changes to remain as healthy as possible . It ’ s a process that Cathy Gero comes to daily with an open heart and mind , a process that she hopes to make easier for other people living with the same disease , through her own generous gifts .

“ My full-time job is living with cancer and dealing with all of the ups and downs

I ’ ve come to appreciate things to a greater extent , and to be very cognizant of the fact that it ’ s important for cancer patients to be educated .”

Cathy , a patient of Baylor Scott & White Health , and her husband , Jim Gero , have committed $ 10 million from their estate that will ultimately be added to the endowment fund they established this year for oncology research and education . This is part of their plan to support initiatives at Baylor Scott & White during their lifetimes and also after their passing .

“ We have been supporting education , healthcare , conservation and wildlife initiatives for years ,” Jim explained of their philanthropy . “ About five or six years ago , we decided we wanted to distribute more of our wealth while we ’ re alive . Also during that same time , we determined we needed to update and modify our estate plan .”
