Issue 75: August 2016
Bitter sweet moments as
we bid a fond farewell
NMC Civils, a division of the
NMC Construction Group, bid
farewell to their construction
veteran Graham Sanders.
Graham leaves the world of
construction with almost 46
years experience in the
industry.
He started his career in
Durban working for
consulting engineers,
Campbell, Bernstein & Irving.
Realising his passion lies in
construction he moved on to
Grinaker Construction and
Basil Read travelling the
African continent. He joined
NMC Civils in February 2010
and bids farewell to what he
describes as “the greatest
planet I have ever lived on!”.
“Graham is a contractor at
heart, one who has a passion
for getting the job done and
making money. To others he
might have seemed grumpy,
vocal in his comments and
vociferous in his opinions, to
Graham and those that know
him well, he is steadfast and
resolute in making things
happen in the best interest of
NMC Civils.” George De
Sousa, COO NMC Civils.
“I shall miss all that I shall be
leaving behind. It has been a
privilege working in such a
friendly, reactive
environment, and I hope to
keep in touch with as many
people as possible. “

V&A Waterfront projects stand out proud
The NMC Construction Group is proud to
announce that the Silo 6 Radisson Red
Hotel and V&A Waterway House teams

their respective categories at the 2016

awards ceremony.
The positive results achieved in the
Master Builders South Africa regional
and national competitions are a result of
both teams working together to uphold
the company ethos of setting the
construction standard. They achieved
this through consistently striving to
maintain a site that is a positive reflection
of the NMC brand values.
“I would like to congratulate the team on
their dedication, enthusiasm and insight.
They are truly an inspiration to us all. I
wish the team and the individuals as they
move forward in their careers and work
in different teams many years of great
achievements.” Dale Gay, Contracts
Manager.
Despite the widespread recognition,
these teams continue to power through
tight deadlines, making good progress
on their respective projects, a testament
to their hard work and dedication.

With Belhar Phase I
complete, NMC Civils
are charging ahead
full steam on Phase II
The Belhar and surrounding communities will soon
benefit from additional formal housing as well as an
upgraded local bus terminal.
The Department of Human Settlements initiated the
first phase of this project in 2014, in line with their
mandate to develop sustainable integrated human
settlements in the Western Cape.
NMC Civils, a division of the NMC Construction Group, was
awarded the Belhar phase two project on the back of the
successful completion of Belhar phase one.
The award of this contract continues the team’s relationship with
Calgro M3 Developments, a listed company with its head office in
Johannesburg.
The scope of works includes bulk services and roadworks,
demolishing works of the old bus terminal and construction of a
new terminal. The project also includes construction of an 8m
deep sewer pump station.
“We are making good progress despite our asbestos discovery.
The asbestos was unexpected but we’re managing the extraction
process by adhering to the legal requirements to ensure the
health and safety of our employees and the community. I am very
proud of the team’s performance to date and thank them for their
hard work and dedication. We look forward to a successful
handover in February 2017.” Ian Daniels, Site Agent.
What is Asbestos and why is it dangerous?
There are two types of asbestos minerals, namely chrysotile (serpentine asbestos)
and amphibole asbestos. Serpentine asbestos is usually not associated with
asbestos cancer. However, if inhaled it may cause irritation to the interior surfaces
of the lungs. Being exposed to amphibole asbestos is much more dangerous and
the leading cause of pleural mesothelioma, an unusual but frequently fatal
disease affecting the lining between the lungs and the chest cavity.
