Public welcome to visit and shop at St. Mary’s
Country Store in Winsted

Some enterprising women recently opened The
Country Store at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
The idea for a store was brought up by staffer Mi-
chele Muller at a resident council meeting, said Don-
na Reese, who is the vice president of the group.
“Michele talked about her dream to have a store,
so residents can shop,” Reese said. “She was getting
emotional, so I thought I had to dive in and help.”
Dream to reality
Following additional discussion, residents and staff
pinned down goals for the store.
Of course, they wanted to offer shopping opportu-
nities for residents, but they also wanted the public to
know they are encouraged to visit and shop, too.
In addition, the group set a clear path for store
profi ts. They decided that funds raised would be used
to help pay for projects and activities for residents.
Bingo, outings, and musical entertainment are some
acceptable uses of store monies.
Profi t might also be used to provide small tokens of
appreciation for staff members.
Setting up shop
Resident Margie Kritzeck was on board to help
with the store from its earliest days. She said, once
the group knew it could use a vacant exercise room,
they began collecting donations for store stock. That
was about six weeks ago.
During the next two weeks, residents and staff set
up and merchandised the store. The Country Store
offi cially opened for business a month ago.
Kritzeck said the store is off to a solid start, noting
it has already brought in $300.
