By Clara Beard | LB Indy Oligino Laux Construction recently completed a successful remodel and accessory dwelling unit ( ADU ) addition of a historic home on Crescent Bay Drive , originally designed by prominent Laguna Beach architect Aubrey St . Clair .

St . Clair was a impressionist artist and architect , who , after moving to Laguna in 1935 , designed Laguna Beach City Hall , the water district building , the Isch building - where the Greeter ’ s Corner Restaurant operates - the Bette Davis home , and several other waterfront homes and buildings .

Oligino and Laux went to great lengths to recreate the unique architectural features in the house , like the trusses , millwork and moldings , which they duplicated in the ADU . The result was a near-replica of the original house ’ s design . They hope the accomplishment can help set the standard for Laguna ’ s historic homeowners who also wish to build ADUs . Construction of the remodel and ADU started in July 2021 and ultimately finished in early 2023 .

By Clara Beard | LB Indy The Laguna Playhouse will be humming with a variety of classical and contemporary concerts and music-related activities when the 21st annual Laguna Beach Music Festival kicks off today at 8 p . m .

Artistic director , New York Times bestselling author and MacArthur “ Genius ” Grant Fellow Jeremy Denk will team up with renowned violinist Stefan Jackiw , the Isidore String Quartet and Choral Arts Initiative for three days of classical and contemporary concerts hosted by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County and Laguna Beach Live !

The event opens today at 8 p . m . with “ Hymns , Songs , and Sonatas ,” featuring Denk and Jackiw performing Charles Ives ’ Violin Sonatas Nos . 3 and 4 . The Choral Arts Initiative , led by artistic director Brandon Elliott , will perform “ Beulah Land ” and “ I Need Thee Every Hour ,” two popular gospel hymns referenced in Ives ’ Third Violin Sonata .

Laguna Beach Committees Welcome Returning and Newly Appointed Members

Laguna Beach ’ s City Council convened on Feb . 7 to interview and appoint residents to eight integral committees within the City .

Throughout the meeting , candidates stepped to the podium to highlight their experiences and how their skills would benefit the committees . Although a handful of residents withdrew from the race , others called in via Zoom , sent letters or audio recordings in their absence .

“ This is an extraordinary group of people who have applied . I think it ’ s the largest number of people who have ever applied in the 10 years I ’ ve been up here , which is fantastic ,” Laguna Beach Mayor Bob Whelan said . “ Not everybody ’ s going to get picked tonight . There are more qualified people than there are slots so I hope if you ’ re not selected , you ’ ll stay engaged , stay interested .”

To begin the process , Councilmembers voted unanimously to extend the terms for the Arts Commission and the Planning Commission members .

The Audit Review and Investment Advisory Committee welcomed Jolie Eisner , Glenn Gray , and Sasha Talebi . All three appointees have experience in banking , finance , and audits , which is essential since this committee ensures that Measure LL spending is within the guide guidelines . Passed in 2016 , Measure LL increased the transient occupancy tax rate from 10 % to 12 %, and it ’ s paid by tourists who stay in hotels and other lodging establishments for 30 days or less .
