PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION
Up and running
The Ted & Sue Getterman Sports and Orthopedic Center is open!
ust four months after its grand opening,
the Ted & Sue Getterman Sports and
Orthopedic Center reports more than
8,000 patient visits across all services.
Even in the midst of COVID-19,
caregivers continued to serve patients.
Because of the layout in the new facility,
patients were able to follow social
distancing guidelines and continue with
physical therapy.
“I’ve often reflected on the
implications of the pandemic if it had
occurred a year earlier. Patients would
have only been a few feet apart in our old
facility,” says Lynn Glass, manager of the
rehabilitation program. “The new indoor
and outdoor rehabilitation space we’ve
been blessed with at the Getterman
Sports & Orthopedic Center allowed us
to continue to treat appropriate patients
throughout the pandemic. While other
hospital services were suspended, our new
space allowed us to ensure that patients
got the care they needed. The magnitude
of that blessing is not lost on me.”
This 106,000-square-foot, fourstory
center fulfills a vision inspired by
orthopedic surgeons Dr. Jon Ellis and
Dr. David Haynes, who helped establish
Baylor Scott & White Southwest Sports
Medicine. “Contributions from many
people made this a reality,” says Dr. Haynes.
“Bringing together a full spectrum of
sports medicine, orthopedic, and sports
performance services under one roof was
a 15-year vision. I am very grateful to all
who made it possible.”

hospital system’s dream; renowned,

committees, and always willing to respond

needs,” says Glenn Robinson, President,
Baylor Scott & White Medical Center -
Hillcrest. “The Getterman Wellness Center
and the Ted & Sue Getterman Sports
& Orthopedic Center represent the
family’s commitment to healthy lifestyles,
innovative fitness and recovery, and the
desire to improve the lives of both the
young and young at heart in Waco.”
“Being active is a priority in my life,”
says Becky Lindsey, donor and chair of the
fundraising committee for the facility. “Not
only does it keep me healthy, it also keeps
me involved—in my work, with my family, in
my community. However, I know that one
day I will need orthopedic care to keep me
moving, and that’s why my husband and I
are so honored to be part of this premier
destination for sports medicine and
orthopedic care.”
