The search for a new Head Football Coach here at Brother Rice went national , but we didn ’ t go very far to find our man . On Feb . 2 , less than seven weeks after controversially dismissing Mr . David Sofran after three seasons , Brother Rice announced that Mr . Adam Korzeniewski was the new coach .

First announced to the team in a meeting in the chapel , “ Coach K ” was welcomed back to Rice after a three-year absence . Korzeniewski was the Defensive Coordinator from 2010-13 , being part of three State Championships in his tenure , under legendary Head Coach Al Fracassa .

Korzeniewski , the Defensive Coordinator at Birmingham Seaholm High School for the past three seasons , couldn ’ t resist the opportunity to come back to lead the program at Rice . At a public induction ceremony in the ARC on Feb . 3 , Coach K called this opportunity “ beyond special .”

“ The students here understand purpose in education ,” he said . “ They want to be coached in order become better , on and off the field . I ’ m proud to continue in the tradition of Coach Fracassa , who first brought me to this school and for whom I have the highest level of respect .”

Alumni who played for Korzeniewski give him very high marks .

“ He ’ s one of the best coaches I ’ ve ever been around ,” said Navin Abro , Class of 2014 , a defensive back under Korzeniewski and now a student at Michigan State . “ Even after years of playing , he still comes around to check up on you and to see how you ’ re doing .”

Reidy , Mr . Calcaterra , and Ms . Jackson put together a search committee that was composed of three administrators ; an alumnus and former football player ; a current Brother Rice head coach ; a current Brother Rice faculty member ; a Christian Brother ; and a Brother Rice Board Director .

“ Coach Korzeniewski emerged as the top candidate ,” President Tom Reidy said , “ and we are so happy to have him back with us .”

With many people having differing opinions on how this coaching search was

conducted from start to finish , we at the Chieftain want to wish Coach K the best of luck in continuing the strong tradition of Brother Rice football and , even more importantly , carrying out the mission of Blessed Edmund Rice in creating more complete men .
