Easily the most important culinary seasoning, it's no surprise that sale (salt) shows up in a number of expressions that cover a wide range of topics.

Some are similar to their English counterparts, including il sale della terra (the salt of the earth)— used in Italian to mean somebody who is wise or intellectual, or when used ironically, a know-it-all.)
