NEWS JUNE 2019 MAA’s 40th Annual Arbor Day Celebration A Great Day at Appleton Farms! Conservation and preservation were the theme of the day at Appleton Farms in Ipswich, MA on April 26, 2019. Selected as the site of the MAA’s 2019 Arbor Day of Service celebration, Appleton Farms is the oldest continuously operating farm in the country. The Trustees rolled out the red carpet for more than 200 member volunteers who arrived at the crack of dawn. The enthusiastic spirit of the day was contagious as members worked side- by-side throughout the morning in cold, rainy conditions to remove danger- ous and invasive trees, safety prune, grind stumps and plant many specimen trees that will live on at Appleton for years to come. At the end of the work day, a bluegrass band welcomed the volunteers back to warm themselves by a makeshift firepit and enjoy a delicious farm-to-table lunch provided by the folks at Appleton Farms. Alicia Leuba, Trustees Vice President for the Eastern Region, addressed the group during lunch. She recognized the volunteers for their “extraordinary work on this diverse and aging landscape.” She thanked the MAA for part- nering with the Trustees and noted that the Arbor Day project, held 10 years (continued on page 3) Where the best in the tree industry come together.
