But Addison Wolfe’s first holidays were a little bit different. Addison was born on August 26, 2014 with a tumor, a heart complication, and a hematoma on her brain. In spite of her complications, parents Stephanie and Mathew Wolfe hoped that after surgery, Addison’s stay in the NICU would only last four to six weeks. Unfortunately, four to six weeks turned into nearly a year. Every year, thousands of children and their families have to spend the holidays in the hospital. This can be a very emotional time for parents, who are worried about their child, and for children, who might need a little extra cheering up. At McLane Children’s, our staff work to make the hospital a fun and festive place to spend holidays, no matter the time of year. During Addison’s time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at McLane Children’s, Stephanie and Mathew did their best to enjoy the holidays, which included not only Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but also New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Memorial Day. “When your child hasn’t been born yet, you imagine what their life is going to be like, what your life will be like with a baby,” Stephanie says. “A lot of moms fantasize about holidays and birthdays. When you have a child in the hospital in critical condition, it doesn’t turn out like you originally envisioned.” “A LOT OF MOMS FANTASIZE ABOUT HOLIDAYS AND BIRTHDAYS. WHEN YOU HAVE A CHILD IN THE HOSPITAL IN CRITICAL CONDITION, IT DOESN’T TURN OUT LIKE YOU ORIGINALLY ENVISIONED.” — Stephanie Wolfe John L.
