The Edmonton Muse March 2019 | Page 8

My name is Amaury Fortuna, I was born on a Caribbean island, and grew up in several different cities in North America. Edmonton has been my home for the past six years; the minute I’ve stepped out of the plane when arriving in Edmonton, this wonderful place had the feeling of home to me. In recent years art has made a huge impact in my life, helping me rediscover who I truly am and finding new ways of expressing myself and my journey.

My art is about merging together all different aspects of one’s self. In my life it translates to taking all obstacles, challenges, trauma, blockages, personal and interpersonal relationships from my childhood up to this very moment, in order to create a distinct energy signature that is impossible for language to describe. Therefore, fully depicting my imagination with a high level of intricacy though my subconscious mind’s eyes, achieving a space in the now where time does not exist. Addicted to the energy admitted by the public’s eye,s wondering though out distinct sections of every canvas made, making the world feel this way in a sense... even if is just for one second . That my friends is what I love to achieve with my body of work.

My muse consists in different activities that I’ve found to be miraculous in my life experience, they consist of meditation, long walks in general but when I walk in nature it really does something amazing to my soul. And finally, contemplation. Hearing the sound silence makes really enhances my focus. Two to three hours walks, thirty to forty minutes of meditation - gets me ready to create. Sometimes a second after I wake up with some practice I’m able to stay for a while in between states. In other words, I can paint my dreams! That is my formula .

I’m currently using a studio space at Lotus gallery, where there is no monthly charge. Finances are not always good, in my experience, so having no extra monthly expenses have helped immensely and I honestly think we should have more places like this in our city. I’m forever grateful for this opportunity. Working out of Lotus gallery has completely opened a new world for me. We get to work with talented individuals that truly have the knowledge and understanding of how the art world operates, teaching resident artists the business aspect from the ground up . I have to say this galley has become a new family and a safe haven that I can retrieve to when ordinary life gets too hectic .
