Beekeeping for Beginners | Adults Discover how to start and manage your own beehives at home ! Expert beekeeper Phillip Raines will use hands-on training at the hives ( weather permitting ), along with discussion and lecture to take you through setting up a hive . Topics will include the benefits of local beekeeping , equipment , a year in the life of a beekeeper , pest management and more . Lunch will be provided . Min / Max is 12 / 35 . NATUREPLAY Film Screening | Adults A new style of education is growing roots in the world . NATUREPLAY is a beautifully filmed documentary that explores how other countries are teaching their children using the outdoors as both classroom and curriculum . The film will be followed by a brief Q & A with local experts as well as an optional walk through Heller ’ s Wander Woods nature play space . Warblers 101 | Adults If you ’ ve never seen a Blackburnian Warbler , an Ovenbird , or any of the more than two dozen other colorful warbler species that pass through Chicago from late April through May as they migrate north , you ’ re in for a treat . Learn how to identify these spring beauties with Morton Arboretum ornithology instructor Denis Kania , who will also explain foraging practices , habitat preferences , and the miracle of migration . This program may include a walk outside ; dress for the weather . This program is in conjunction with the Lake Cook Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society . No pre-registration required . Horicon Marsh Trip | Adults Travel with a Heller naturalist to Horicon Marsh , a 33,000 acre Wisconsin wetland , to view the spring migration . Thousands of birds come through the protected wetland each spring , and you can see up to 100 species in one day ! We ’ ll take a guided boat tour on the wetland , followed by a visit to the Visitor Center and a 1 to 2-mile hike to get another view of the Marsh and its inhabitants . Spring Bird Count | Adults Help staff and volunteers conduct the annual lakefront bird census , then recap the fun over breakfast at Heller Nature Center . Results are added to a national database to aid in research regarding shoreline habitat protection .
