It ’ s Back to Better at the Family Connection Food Pantry
The Food Pantry at Family Connection reopened for client visits on May 3 , 2021 . Due to Covid-19 , since March 2020 clients had been served from their vehicles with pantry volunteers delivering carts to the sidewalk area outside the pantry door . The Food Pantry received record-breaking visits during the pandemic with the largest service week ever being recorded in October , 2020 . As of March 2021 , pantry visits returned to just above normal numbers and with the reduced rate of Covid-19 , staff and volunteers were ready to return to “ back to better ” operations . Before the doors opened , staff retooled and implemented improvements .
The front lobby was rearranged to include a shopping area for clients . Feed Fannin now operates a “ Farm to Pantry ” program where the organization buys fresh produce from local growers and delivers the produce to the Food Pantry . There are coolers and shelving units for the produce . Clients can choose from the inventory when they visit . This new service provided by Feed Fannin has been a hit with the pantry families .
Also , the local Taste of the Amish store donated two rustic shelving units which have become the display for extra condiments and other food products that are purchased from the Chattanooga Area Food Bank ( CAFB ). Additionally , we ’ ve been able to purchase cleaning supplies and health and beauty aids through the CAFB . These products are also available for clients to shop and choose what is helpful for their families . ( Continued , Page 2 )
The Pantry Lobby retooling included adding a produce shopping area , stocked by Feed Fannin , andshelves overflowing with bagged and bottled items . Another shopping area ( not pictured ) is filled with cleaning supplies and hygiene items .
