Water Use Efficiency
The Airports Authority has installed low flow fixtures throughout Reagan National Airport , the next highest potential water saving opportunity is to improve how the airports perform water treatment . Traditionally , cooling tower water treatment uses chemicals , blowdown and adding fresh water , to maintain the efficiency and functionality of the cooling towers . Alternative Water Treatment ( AWT ) uses non-chemical and environmental-friendly method to treat water , with the benefits to reduce blowdown / sewerage and the needs of adding fresh water into the condenser water loop . As a next step , the Airports Authority is working with NREL to determine potential AWT methods for potential implementation at Reagan National Airport .
