Current Situation
• For the 2020 school year, there are 60 public schools in
Buffalo City School District, serving 33,100 students.
• Public schools in Buffalo City School District have an
average math proficiency score of 27% (versus the New
York public school average of 52%) and reading
proficiency score of 28% (versus the 50% statewide
average). This district's average school ranking is in the
bottom 50% of public schools in New York.
• Minority enrollment is 80% of the student body
(majority Black), which is more than the New York public
school average of 57% (majority Hispanic and Black).
The graduation rate is low, and students lack postsecondary
training pathways.
• The district lacks adequate resources for health and
physical education training, health literacy and selfsufficiency
and to engage the community to create a
healthy and proficient student body.
• The district’s Whole Community, Whole School, Whole
Student initiative has begun to show success, but the
region lacks a real-time, coordinated and accessible
directory of education, health and social service
resources and coordinated calendar of physical activity
and health promotional events.
