Farmer Matija Gubec along with Elija Gregorić, led a revolt of Slovenian and Croatian Peasants triggered by cruelty by nobleman Ference Tahy. Gubec was captured near Stucke and taken to Zagreb, where he was tortured, crowned with a red-hot iron crown and dismembered.

The peasants have accused their masters of a weak defense against the Turks, which has seen the Ottomans expand their grip on the region to include most of Slovenia. Christian territory has been reduced to about 20,000 km². In 1558, the parliaments of Croatia and Slovenia were united.

Nobles Demand

Demands for higher taxes and forced labour to help defend the territories of Inner and Upper Carnolia against the Turks have seen revolts across the whole Slovenian territory. Revolts against feudalism continue. The most striking peasant revolts have seen the Slovenian and Croatian peasants fight together against the tyranny of their feudal lords.

I wrote the ABECEDARIUM, so that everyone can learn to read. I think it is a giant step in helping Slovenian culture make headway in the world.' With the reformation in full swing Trubar has managed to set the foundation for the Slovenian standard.
