High banks preserve
Scenic Hudson dedicates new park in Esopus

Recently the Plattekill Library
board held elections, resulting in all of
the incumbents being re-elected; Lynn
Ridgeway, William Farrell, Valerie Smith
and David Padilla. Ridgeway and Smith
were subsequently voted in as President
and Vice President, respectively by the
board.
In recent years the Library has been
discussing two options for a new library;
purchasing their present site from
the town and possibly building a new
structure there or buying a parcel just
across Rte. 32 that was a former cider mill.
The board has been deeply divided over
these two proposals.

based
environmental organization Scenic
Hudson just added High Banks Preserve
in Esopus, to a long list of areas that they
have been saving and preserving for
public recreational use in the Hudson
Valley since their founding in 1963.
In a prepared statement, Scenic
Hudson said the 287-acre preserve is the
fourth natural area in Esopus they have
created that “contains bluffs offering
superb vistas of the Hudson River as
well as extensive wetlands, wildflowerfilled meadows, hardwood forests and

shoreline along the Esopus Lake. The
property’s great variety of habitats has
earned its designation as an important
plant area by the NYS Department of
Environmental Conservation’s Natural
Heritage Program while Esopus Lake is
