Not Your Mama's Florence Itinerary!

Do you remember where you were in the summer of 2015? I certainly do because it was the summer I lived in Florence, Italy. I had the pleasure of studying food and wine in beautiful Firenze on the weekdays, and traveling across Italy and Europe in between my lessons. More about that another time!

Although that summer absolutely flew by, Florence became home to me and I will always have a special place in my heart for the people and their special culture. With that being said, living somewhere provides a totally different perspective than visiting does. That is why I want to equip you with a list of recommendations based on where I had the best memories that summer, so you don’t have to waste any time being unsure.

This is not your mama’s Florence itinerary! I hope you fall in love with this amazing city as much as I did.

1. DUOMO DI FIRENZE

If you are reading this right now, you have likely heard of Florence’s most iconic landmark: The Duomo. Standing tall above the city, the Duomo is the most central cathedral in all of Florence. I was fortunate enough to live just a few blocks away from this beauty, and spent many evenings with gelato and friends on the steps.

After seeing the Duomo from all sides, all you need to do to complete the experience is climb to the top for one of the most expansive views of the city!

2. MICHELANGELO’S DAVID

Even if you aren’t super into art, Michelangelo’s David is a must-see during your trip to Florence. Located in Galleria dell’Academia, David is a force to be reckoned with thanks to his massive scale and keen detail. The story of Michelangelo’s life is also so fascinating that it left me deep in thought for days after my visit.

You are not supposed to take pictures in the Academia, so I have chosen not to include one in this piece. Trust me, it’s way cooler in person anyway!

3. THE PONTE VECCHIO

No trip to Florence is complete without time spent at the Ponte Vecchio. The Old Bridge connects one side of Florence to the other across the Arno River. The bridge has undergone multiple reconstructions due to flooding, but has stood defiant against the elements as a unique beauty into present day.

One of my favorite moments spent at the Ponte Vecchio was on St. John Feast Day. On June 24, Florence celebrates the feast day for its patron saint, St. John the Baptist. I won’t go into too much detail about it here, but a massive parade through the city and fireworks above the Ponte Vecchio spelled out one incredible day in Firenze.

4. BOBOLI GARDENS

Enjoy some peace and quiet away from the bustling city at the Boboli Gardens.
