March 2020 IT Leaders Edition TECHNICITY ISSUE #05 Business Technology + sychronicity FINDING PURPOSE IN THE BUSINESS WORLD: A MATTER OF PERSPECTIVE “You can train your mind to see the good in everything” A survey conducted by The Conference Board shows that 46 percent of US workers are not satisfied with their employment. The good news is that this number has been decreasing over the last eight years, but it still leaves a lot of us that are not happy. I found myself a few years ago very stressed at a seeming lack of meaning in what I was doing day to day—we’re not exactly saving the world selling and supporting printers and copiers! One of the most frequently repeated pieces of advice is “Follow your passion,” and my job didn’t seem to align with this until I realized that meaning could be found with a simple shift of perspective. New Harvard research has shown that chasing your purpose is a better path than chasing your passion. In a recent article on Inc.com detailing the research, it said “chasing passion, in other words, tends to make you less satisfied at work because—no huge shocker here—work is often difficult, draining, and even boring. So, are you doomed to simply take whatever job you can do that pays the bills? Nope……All you need to do is substitute 'purpose' for 'passion' when considering your path.” So what I started to realize is that it is not necessarily only what you are doing, but also how you are doing something that can make a difference and bridge a pathway to purpose. This thinking led me to define A M Exclusive’s Core Values so that I could help to reinforce and strengthen all the good within our company. When I focus on things like this, I feel that I am fulfilling my purpose and feel more at peace. In any situation, I believe you can train your mind to see the good in everything. It is all a matter of perspective. In the next few issues, I’ll be highlighting a different Core Value of ours. You’ll find more about our value of “Helping You To Succeed” on page 3. As always, we wish you the best and hope that you know we are here to help in any way we can! - Jaclyn Morse, Vice President
