My good hunting and fishing buddy James Hodgins held a cane in his hand. His .22 was slung over his shoulder. He hobbled down the trail and slowly crouched down. There was a grouse up ahead. James brought his rifle up to shoot. He then fell over on his side. He shook his head and quickly brought himself back into proper shooting position. The grouse was still there. He fired a shot and made a direct hit.

After close to four hours and many kilometres of hobbling around, James had his first bird of the day.

It was a good moment. It was another example of how perseverance pays off with anything in life.

Last fall, the grouse hunting in the Zone 10 area of northern Ontario was nothing short of superb.

There were many days of full limit bags and seeing plenty of bush chickens.
