Drug dealers and users who pay rent in Maybrook could soon be sent packing, thanks to a new law adopted Monday night by the village board. The village board, this week, adopted a local law entitled “…ability of the village of Maybrook to force the eviction of tenants from rental properties where it has been determined that such rental properties are being used for the purpose of illegal drug use, possession or sale.” In short after two convictions of illegal drug use, possession or sale within a year and inside an apartment the village will have the authority to evict the criminal from the rental property on their own. Since Mayor Dennis Leahy has gone into office eight years ago he and the board have been trying to “chip away at the big tree with the little axe,” a saying Leahy frequently uses, to bring change to the community. “This is nothing that is going to hurt us,” Deputy Mayor Noreen Reynolds said. “Yes, there is only benefit down the line,” Trustee Kevin Greany agreed. This is one of many initiatives the board has made to further the safety and economic development of the village. Earlier in the summer the board approved the installation of cameras outside the Government Center, along Tower Avenue and various other streets in the village.
